Community Initiative

Community Initiative

Opéra Louisiane’s Community Initiative is a high impact engagement initiative that brings opera to local after school programs. Through this initiative, each year, Opéra Louisiane reaches out to hundreds of youth and students. Opéra Louisiane works with after school organizations serving economically disadvantaged students and schools in East Baton Rouge parish. Opéra Louisiane visits those organizations prior to the performance with a pianist, singer, a music educator, and educators from other disciplines. Using the themes of the opera, presenters share background information about the opera, discuss social issues the opera addresses, and perform selections from the opera for the students. Organizations are also provided with an in-depth study guide relating to the opera to follow up on and study the story on their own. Finally, the students are invited to attend the final dress rehearsal of the fully staged opera. Part of Opéra Louisiane’s mission is to educate our school children and culturally enrich our community. We have found that these initiatives like “Hoffmann in the Community” are the best way to do just that.
