The Traditional YPOP.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, traditional YPOP performances have been suspended at this time.

Opéra Louisiane’s Young People’s Opera Program performances of The Magic FluteCinderella, and Hansel and Gretel are sung in English, accompanied by orchestra, and include sets, lighting, and costumes. Every year, all 4th, 5th, and 6th grade teachers, as well as music teachers, in the Greater Baton Rouge area are invited to attend the school performances to enjoy one of these productions. Reservations are taken on a first-come, first-served basis. Once registration is complete, Opéra Louisiane gives teachers an educational packet that helps prepare students for the opera and provides tools for how to use opera in teaching core standards. This packet includes lesson ideas, opera testing materials, and information about using opera to impart basic ideas of math, literature, history, and even physical fitness through opera.

YPOP is a continuing program that was established in 2008 through a cooperative endeavor agreement with the City. Through this program, Opéra Louisiane provides free opera for students in the Greater Baton Rouge area. Since the first Young People’s Opera performance in 2008, Opéra Louisiane has presented fully staged operas to over 37,000 students, completely free of charge.
